Screenshot of sample garbled category list.

Trying to set MediaWiki:Catseparator as {{int:pipe-separator}}
so as to have only one unique separator, yields garbage, as
the attached screen shot shows.

Confirmed on local install. On the one hand, it's probably not a good idea to do this anyway. But at the same time: you should expect it to work if you do it.
