Update Vietnamese interface
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

The Vietnamese Wiktionary (vi:) is very much out of sync with the Vietnamese
Wikipedia, where we have changed a large number of translations using the
MediaWiki: namespace. There isn't yet a localization file for Vietnamese, but we
were hoping that the MediaWiki messages could be imported from Wikipedia to
Wiktionary. This would make our lives much easier. Since I'm a sysop at both
wikis, I'll then go into Wiktionary afterwards and customize the imported
messages to say "Wiktionary" instead of "Wikipedia", for example.

At the moment we don't really have a clean way to do this kind of importing. It
could be done with a little work, but I think it would be better still to take the
material from vi.wikipedia.org and make a language file, then update all the other
wikis from there.

(Note that there are stub sites at vi.wikibooks.org and vi.wikiquote.org as well
already, plus whatever future sites and third party wikis would benefit from having
a base translation file ready.)

You can start by generating a message array straight out of the wiki:

Trần Thế Trung (vi:User:Tttrung) has mostly translated MediaWiki 1.5. We're
working on reviewing the translations, and hopefully it'll be ready to use in a
couple weeks.

One question though: what about all the customized messages at the Vietnamese
Wikipedia? The MediaWiki localization uses a pretty simple, one-line version of
vi:MediaWiki:Noarticletext, for example, while we've customized it to look
pretty and explanatory. On the other hand, many of our customizations are simply
straight translations of the MediaWiki defaults. Will our actual customizations
be overridden, or will we be able to pick and choose?

The default update is to overwrite only those messages last 'edited' by the
pseudo-user "MediaWiki default". Anything that's been customized by
editing within the wiki will thus stay.

Here is LanguageVi.php for Vietnamese interface, that should work with
MediaWiki 1.5 beta.

This file is updated on 17 Jul 2005, which has bug fixed on Dtae & Time
Preferences, from previous version sent to :vi:User:Mxn.

There are still some System Messages here and there that are not translated, or
not "well" translated, mostly on about "exif". This mean update may be
available in future.

Can look from

what language file should and should not contain. Currently there is lots of old
stuff and stuff that only Language.php should have.

Version 28 - Aug

Here is the newest version. I have added things that ressemble LanguageRu.php.
I have not delete any things. If any one find things that should be reserved
for Language.php, they can delete them.

The section on "exif" is still not fully translated, but this sould not be a
big problem for now, since very few people use it.

In my opinion this version can be used now - quality not highest but
acceptable, given the limited time that I have for this.

Version 05 Sep 2005, fix magic word

Firstly, thanks for the update to Vietnamese Wikipedia. Many of the features
are working fine. Actually many system messages remain in old versions, even if
they were originally created by MediaWiki default in English and have not been
translated manually.

Here I give a small modif which might be better for not inteferencing with
$wgMagicWordsEn.

Change
$wgMagicWordsEn -> $wgMagicWordsVi
Add
function getMagicWords()
To make $wgMagicWordsVi effective.

Could some one help formatting number "2 005" to "2.005"?

I also wander why MAG_REDIRECT does not work in Vietnamese.

We are waiting for updating on other Vietnamese Wiki (Wiktionary, ...).

For now:
Could some one help formatting number "2 005" to "2005"?
Could some one help formatting number "12 005" to "12005"?
(the simplest format, and more robust to fit more tastes).

fix number formatting

Here is the fix for number formatting.

I notice that the all other Vietnamese wiki have been updated with this new
language file.

There is however still one small bug on the tooltip for Vietnamese Wiktionary
and for at least IE. When I logout the tooltips are in English. When I login
the tooltips are in Vietnamese!

minor error fixing

This is better (sorry, I forgot some separating ","). Someone could test this
for me since I am "blinded": can not run MediaWiki to test this rightnow;
although there is high chance that this should work correctly now, since the
changes are really minor.

You probably have to do a "hard reload" (IE: Shift+Reload; Moz: Ctrl+Reload),
because your browser probably isn't picking up the new and improved JavaScript
file. If that doesn't work then it's probably a bug.

Also, the number formatting is screwing up the display of years. Now, the year
2005 is displayed as "2 005". I haven't taken a look at the revised patch yet,
but please ensure that years aren't going to be displayed as "2.005". That would
look quite embarassing!

Also, the "Wikipedia talk" namespace isn't setup as a synonym for "Thảo luận
Wikipedia", breaking a number of links. Changing severity to "major", since it
breaks too many links.

Thanks, that works.

The number formatting is fixed by new patch.

The "Wikipedia talk" bug is harder, I have look around wiki in other
languages but none solves this. None have "Wikipedia talk", they (French,
German, Russian) all have that namespace in their languages. Either we
have to manually change all ancient links to Vietnamese or use "Wikipedia
talk" instead of "Thảo luận Wikipedia", if we cannot wait for a patch to
resolve this bug. I vote for manually changing the links since it provide
consistent naming convention.

for me, since I cannot have MediaWiki with me right now.

Please use the newest version in

http://cvs.defau.lt/cvsweb.cgi/~checkout~/phase3/languages/LanguageVi.php?rev=1.3&content-type=text/plain
) as the base version where you do the modifications. It would take *much* time
to do the diffs between the new files you have posted and the original base and
merging them to the file I cleaned up and committed to cvs.

Voila: the patch based on your committed version. If you diffs, search for
"#Change" because I have note the important changes with this tag.

Good new: I have test this patch and it works: fix all the mentioned bugs.

I have also add some message translations and remove many line-breaking
characters inside the Vietnamese message that my Microsoft Notepad added.

If no more complain is received, you can update the Wiki sites with this patch.

Thanks. It's fixed. The delay is 1 day, which might be improved in future when

There's no longer a thousands separator, because of this code:

var $digitTransTable = array(

 ',' => ,
 '.' => ','

);

It should read:

var $digitTransTable = array(

 ',' => '.',
 '.' => ','

);

Note the '.' in the second line.

tttrung wrote:

Can you give a reference to the thousand seperator '.' in Vietnamese standard?

I have seen '&nbsp' , "'", "`" and .

Any thousands separator would be nice, because some of the numbers (especially
on vi:Đặc biệt:Statistics) get unwieldy without it. (with the
semi-colon at the end) is alright, except that it gets treated as plain text in
some places, so you end up with some messages saying "308 592,5" for
instance. And in English, "'" is used in financial contexts, just to clear up
the confusion between "." and ",". I'm not sure if Vietnamese writers use it the
same way. "." is the traditional European way of punctuating the numbers, and a
lot of Wikipedia language editions use it. If you'd like to hold a vote at the
Vietnamese Wikipedia, that'd be fine, but I think the consensus will probably be
to use ".".

Also: as far as I can tell, the vast majority of articles at the Vietnamese
Wikipedia currently use ".", except for some science articles, since the SI
(Metric System) dictates the use of a space as the separator (technically, it
would be " ", but that character isn't supported by many browsers and fonts.

tttrung wrote:

ok, let's go with "." as thousand seperator.

There hasn't been any activity here for quite some time, probably because this
bug has been marked fixed. Rather than reopening this bug, which is about the
localization file in general, I've reopened an earlier Bug 2721, which dealt
specifically with the digit separators.
