VisualEditor: Dialog for inserting new templates doesn't play well with search results
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Goal: Insert a new template.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Insert > Template
  1. Start typing the template's name: Citation nee…
  1. Think, "Ah, it's found it! It's highlighted and has a checkmark next to it! Great, I can stop typing that long name and just hit return to add the template that I want.
  1. Press return.
  1. Think, "Um, [[Template:Citation nee]] is a redlink. Why did it add that? Why didn't it add the highlighted-and-checkmarked [[Template:Citation needed]]?"

I am inclined to close as Resolved: the feedback to a user for inserting templates has improved

  • there is no check mark to a highlighted suggested selection anymore
  • clicking Return with 'Citation nee' selects the first highlighted template from the suggestions list
    • the next dialog box displays the template's title and info/description to inform a user what kind of a template is about to be inserted
  • That dialog box requires a user to click 'Insert' button explicitly - not just pressing Return keyboard buttonn.
