Define Utilisatrice: as an alias for User: on fr.wikipedia
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Author: le.korrigan

Description:
On the French Wikipedia, the current namespace name for "User:" is "Utilisateur:", which is male-only. Would it be possible to add an alias for this namespace, "Utilisatrice:", which would be the female version ? Or is it considered as something too "futile" ? This has been asked for on the local Village pump.

Is there community consensus for such an alias?

Totaly against. I hope the devs need the full consensus for set such hack. (an antisexist fr wikipedian)

An informal polling on the village pump : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Le_Bistro/23_octobre_2007#Utilisatrice_.3F
It's not 100 % pro but near 66 % (34 pro, 9 neutral and 9 against at the moment).
(Utilisatrice is not sexiste)

Accepting the fact that many languages distinguish between genders and/or neutral in categories means that such capabilities should be built into Mediawiki if it attempts to be multilingual. In fact, some languages don't just have male and female forms of nouns, adjectives etc, but can have three or four categories. Fortunately, they aren't likely to be languages with all four as references to persons (user/admin/etc).

I don't see why it's a big deal even to require a consensus.

well : 4/6 pro, 1/6 against, 1/6 neutral (or 4/5 vs 1/5 if you only count pro vs con) looks consensual enough to me.

Oh, and applauses to the courageous "antisexist" anonymous...

Reopening as 1) a poll has been organised and 2) some developer input would be interesting for this question :-)

Regarding the "antisexist" comment, I don't get the point, as this is a rather trivial change, which hasn't much to do with deep gender issues issues (I think).

A consensus is when everybody is okay. Some people try obviously to push their POV by discrediting their oponents (what does my name matter ? you want to meet me irl for get explications between men with a baseball bat ?)

POV-pushing works both ways, you know :-)

Now, I personally don't have anything with you being "anonymous", but I still do not understand your "antisexist" point. Why would such a trivial change be negative ? The only drawback I see so far is giving the devs one shell operation to do (and these bug comments to read... sorry folks :-)).

It brings a sexual differenciation between contributors, which is menifestly not pertinent on wikipedia.

And an alias is just useless : maybe in signatures it will do a correct redirect, but the pagename of user page will still be "Utilisateur:machine" and not "utilisatrice:machine". we have a template {{titre}} which can do the work perfectly. And we don't know the repercussions on javascripts scripts and so on. Did we have a technical feedback on this ? It's one thing to use a plebiscit for hack (yes it's a hack : something clean should be ONE space for users, not 2, even for satisfact a sexist bias) our Localsettings but it's an other thing to know exactly all the technical repercussions it will do.

*sigh*
making "baseball bat" threats now, alistrius@gmail.com ? about anonymousity, your overexagerrated comments appart, I don't see any decent reason for one to hide it's wiki name. That is, of course, if one is not a banned user and/or known troll.

;About your current comment
MediaWiki doesn't have to adapt to javascript. Javascript has to adapt to MediaWiki evolutions, like it always did. Plus, very few correctly written scripts, if none, should be affected in any way by an alias.

;About further comments from you, I'll just ignore them, considering your agressive attitude up to now. It's unsightly to try to change this page into a tribune war. If you have valuable arguments, please put them on http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Le_Bistro/23_octobre_2007#Utilisatrice_.3F like everybody else did.

Done.

The following namespace aliases exist:

'frwiki' => array(
    'Wikipedia' => NS_PROJECT,
    'Discussion_Wikipedia' => NS_PROJECT_TALK,
    'Utilisatrice' => NS_USER,
    'Discussion_Utilisatrice' => NS_USER_TALK,
),
