is not deprecated in XHTML, and is not equivalent. marks bold specifically, marks emphasis generally, and marks stronger emphasis generally.

If it were changed, would be the closest equivalent.

Of course, you are correct, was superseded by , while is the equivalent of . Looking at the page again, I can see that it is valid XHTML. Whoops.
