Add magic word to specify thumbnail width in category
Open, LowPublicFeature

Description

There should be a PANORAMA (or LANDSCAPE, whatever) magic word specifying that a category contains very wide images. This would then allow MediaWiki to optimize display. Instead of say 6 images per line with thumbnail dimensions "120 x 35", it would have one thumbnail per line, perhaps "800 x 235".

It might be better to allow specifying the exact thumbnail size for a given cat, but that's not at all necessary.

The bug was initially reported at: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#Panoramic_Thumbnails.

A copy of what was reported is listed below:

Recently I’ve become interested in taking Panoramic images, so decided to navigate to Category:Panoramic to pick up inspiration from other peoples panoramic images.

Unfortunately when I got there all that greeted me was rows of tiny thumbnails, some only 3 pixels high (e.g. the thumbnail of 2005-10-25_Doerflingen.jpg this can be viewed here: [[13]]) which made identifying an interesting panoramic image a little hard.

I navigated through some of the panoramic categories and the same problem prevailed, until I came to Commons:Featured pictures/Places/Panoramas, in which 1 panoramic thumbnail is set to 1 line. This makes viewing a panoramic image thumbnail incredibly easy. I understand that what I’m about to suggest may not be easy to implement, but would it be possible to change the code of the wiki so that when an image thumbnail is over a set aspect ratio then it is increased in size, or at least any categories which have been identified as mainly containing panoramic images be set to the same format as Commons:Featured pictures/Places/Panoramas?--PureCore 17:48, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

A magic word to arbitrarily specify the gallery width might be a better option. {{GALLERYWIDTH:xyz}}

I agree, Bryan, but as I said that would be harder to implement and could come later.

Could an option be created for users to increase or decrease thumbnail sizes, so they could adjust them to their own preference? I know in the preferences section - when logged in ( http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences ) under "Files", it is possible to increase or decrease the size of thumbnails, but I've just been playing with it and haven't had much success in getting it working. Perhaps if larger thumbnail sizes where added to this section (and I could figure out how to get it working) then this problem could be solved via that route (however if you didn't have an account you would still have the problem, unless this feature was extended to none logged in users).

This is about only changing the thumbnail width on particular categories, not all.

Summary: "Add PANORAMA magic word, to specify category contains very wide images" -> "Add magic word to specify thumbnail width in category"

Seems still a good idea

Alternatively, something like the image option suggested in bug 35756 would at least avoid the "3 pixel tall" problem.
