Remove mention of "home wiki" from Special:CentralAuth
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

When you start merging your accounts, the wiki on which you do so is made your "home" wiki. You may later decide to change it (for example because you become more active on another wiki), but this is not predicted in the extension yet.

Tim, can you poke at this? Should be pretty quick.

Please give a right to users (not only stewards) to set or change their home wiki.

Not really a good idea, accounts blocked on one wiki can change their homewiki to another and thus can use the same account to vandalise multiple wikis by using the same account by changing homewikis' and evading ban and thus forcing stewards to lock the account. allowing users to change homewikis might not be a good idea yet, but allowing users with sysop rights on any wiki may be a good start.

Then blocked users shouldn't be allowed to do this.

but Warpy, sorry to destroy Your hopes, accounts blocked on their homewiki can switch to other wikis without having to change their homewiki or anything... So that would not matter... however it would make sense to disallow blocked users to access that homewikichangingsystem if it ever will exist.

what? :O
I thought if a user is blocked on his homewiki, he can't unify to other wikis :O but I'm not sure if they can edit other wikis if blocked on their homewiki, they probably can though. O_O

If You worry about users who is blocked, Mediawiki have to allow only users with sysop rights change their old home wiki into their new home wiki.(undoubtedly that users are new home wiki sysops.) I think it is good alternative.

If the account is not yet global he can't unify it (but edit other wikis ;) ), but if the account is global, he can switch to any wiki he wants and edit there.

But that does not matter much, stewards should be able to change peoples home-wikis per request.

I'm taking the liberty of reducing this from "highest" to "low" priority, as the world hasn't ended in the two years or so since the last comment.

I think we went in the opposite direction, as for their abilities to manipulate global accounts.
Home wiki is no longer special for blocks as of few days ago, hence I don't see how it's relevant where it is.
This feature request currently has no rationale and it has downsides (additional interface clutter to start with), hence I'm closing it as rejected. Feel free to reopen if you think it really matters, but do explain what the purpose is.

It has been a while since anyone did anything with this issue. I would like to be able to change my "home" wiki for the sake of accuracy. My home base on Wikimedia is on en not test. Can I please get it changed for the sake of accuracy?

As written before the request is currently missing a rationale.
Could you please elaborate "for the sake of accuracy" and why it outweighs the additional user interface clutter?

I reckon that this is just because people think "it's on Special:CentralAuth, so it must have meaning".
Maybe the easiest would be to change to label of the centralauth-admin-info-home message to something like "wiki of first registration".

It has broken stuff in the past when their homes were deleted (or locked if I remember) iirc.

Lady Aleena, as Andre said your comment doesn't bring new elements to this bug. The "home" wiki has no real meaning or implications nowadays, you should be able to ignore it entirely.

Yes, or even remove the concept of home wiki entirely from the interface (is there a bug for that?)?

Or "First attached wiki" or something? There are a few messages mentioning home wiki; either they refer to the creation of the global account (for legacy accounts) or they seem quite wrong:

CentralAuth.i18n.php
36: 'centralauth-merge-step2-detail' => "Some of the accounts could not be automatically matched to the designated home wiki.
49: 'centralauth-merge-dryrun-home' => "The migration system could not confirm that you are the owner of the home wiki account for your username.
51:Another wiki was determined as the home account for your username; follow the link below and log in there to finish your account migration.",
58: 'centralauth-merge-home-password' => 'The home wiki for this account (listed below) has a different password to the one you entered.
59:Please enter the password for the home wiki.',
82: 'centralauth-list-home-title' => 'Home wiki',
83: 'centralauth-list-home-dryrun' => 'The password and email address set at this wiki will be used for your unified account.',
94: 'centralauth-merge-method-primary' => 'home wiki',
102:Note that it may differ from the real home wiki of that user.',
147: 'centralauth-admin-info-home' => 'Home wiki:',
151: 'centralauth-admin-nohome' => 'unable to determine',

Note that another equivalent term is also used, "primary account".

This bug, I think. :-)
