It would be much easier to upload files if the software just converted files that were in common unacceptable formats. On Wikimedia sites, the following conversions would be particularly useful:
MP3, WMA, AAC -> OGG
BMP -> PNG
WMF, EPS -> SVG

Unlikely to happen if nobody volunteers working in this, plus several items (image formats, video formats) listed in this request which makes it even way more unlikely to ever fix this (one item per project).
Might be better suited for an extension.
