New Special page: Random page in category

Description

It'd be nice if Special:Random could be limited to pages in a certain category. This would be especially useful for large Wikis and Wikipedia Portals. Possible ways:

  • keep Special:Random, but add Special:Random/<category name>
  • create a new Special page with an input form (like Special:RandomPageInCategory and Special:RandomPageInCategory/<category name>)

I believe this is a good candidate for an extension, rather than a core feature. A similar feature was requested a while ago, and I created an extension for that. Please see bug 13051.

Note that this was added in r27380 and removed in r27436.

The extension http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:RandomInCategory exists for this purpose. Don't know if possible to enable it on WMF servers but that should go into another bug.
