When trying to generate http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/thumb.php?w=800&f=Hautes_Pyrenees_topographic_map-fr.svg, rsvg outputs a lot of errors related to fonts. I won't copy/paste everything, but here are the most common errors :

(rsvg-convert:14687): Pango-WARNING **: Unable to open font file /usr/share/fonts/truetype/wqy/wqy-zenhei.ttf for font WenQuanYi Zen Hei Oblique 7.1982421875, falling back to /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSans.ttf

(rsvg-convert:14687): Pango-CRITICAL **: No fonts found:
This probably means that the fontconfig
library is not correctly configured. You may need to
edit the fonts.conf configuration file. More information
about fontconfig can be found in the fontconfig(3) manual
page and on http://fontconfig.org

(rsvg-convert:14687): Pango-WARNING **: failed to find shape engine, expect ugly output. engine-type='PangoRenderFc', script='greek'

(rsvg-convert:14687): Pango-CRITICAL **: No fonts found:
