Front page renders badly on iPhone + some wishes

Screenshot of en.m.wikipedia on an iPhone, portrait mode

As you can see in the attachment screenshot I made, the front page renders badly on the iPhone.

Here’s what I think should be done, at least for the iPhone:

*The logo should be about 300px wide, center-aligned, and at the very top of the page (and on every page, please).
*Under the logo, the search bar should reside.
*The Go button should be removed: There is a button for that integrated in the iPhone keyboard (similar to pressing enter on a computer). I honestly think the Go button will never be used by iPhone users, as tapping the keyboard away in order to tap that button is extremely inconvenient.
*As the Go button is gone, the Random article button can take its place, but is it really necessary? I mean, when using the internet on my iPhone when I’m outside, I have a purpose. I’m not just playing around like I normally would on a computer.
*There should be a link to the normal Wikipedia page in the footer of every page.

Hmm, that’s all I think. Oh, and I hope the mobile version will be available in other languages (like all 100k+ WP languages or something) as well.

You are absolutely right. I hadn't spent much time fixing up the design since we launched and it wasn't primary then. So, hopefully the redesign pushed up today helps some.

Notes on after the redesign:

  • Went with a small W for the logo. Screen real estate is prime.
  • GO is required for phones which might not have a built in search button.
  • Random article is now the logo on the home page... after you click it once (usually it will be by surprise after heavy use) it gives you a message letting you know what just happened.
  • The link on the footer has been implemented.
  • We currently *officially* support 7 languages. The software can handle more, but without localization for the others.

We are accepting new localizations with patches to the file... http://github.com/hcatlin/wikimedia-mobile/blob/418757d85883ff50af4d482d4841464cc32bc10b/config/wikipedias.yaml

Please feel free to add any new languages you want.

Very nice solution! I don’t know how to add it there, and you might want the translation of the text that appears when you tap the logo:

no:

main_page: "Hovedside"
translations:
  go: "Gå"
  search_results: "Søkeresultater"
  no_article_found: "Ingen artikkel funnet"
  featured_article: "Ukens artikkel"
  in_the_news: "Aktuelt"
  random_article: "Tilfeldig side"
copyright: "All tekst er tilgjengelig under GNU Free Documentation License.\n Wikipedia® er et registrert varemerke for Wikimedia Foundation, Inc."
selectors:
  article_of_the_day: "#ukens_artikkel .innhold"
  news_items: "#aktuelt .innhold"

And then, the text that appears when you tap the logo:

Du ble sendt til denne tilfeldige siden fordi du klikket på logoen på hovedsiden.\n Klikk på den igjen for å gå tilbake.

Are there any plans at all to make this available to other Wikipedias too?

Thanks.

I forgot the text in the bottom, the link where you go back to the regular Wikipedia:
