Remove North Korean calendar in MessagesKo.php
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Description:
I suggest to remove North Korean calendar in MessagesKo.php. It was added by bug 18849 and r50804, however, it makes controversies only in ko.wp.

ko.wp users are embarrassed by the existence of North Korean "Juche" calendar. Since there is no North Korean wikipedian in ko.wp, it is useless and it just makes newly signed users confused.

MediaWiki doesn't exist purely for Wikipedia, it's intended to be a wikiplatform on its own too. Maybe someone *does* run a North Korean site somewhere? We don't want to remove this capability for them.

Even if they exist, I think it is not good way to add their own calendar until they actually need it. (South Korea has also its local calendar system but none needs it and adding it also causes confusion.) I think the number of North Korean wiki users is much smaller than the number of people who are confused by North Korea calendar.

Additionally, in South Korea, there is a law ([[en:National Security Act (South Korea)]]) that forbids relationship with North Korea or Communism materials. Although the possibility that it comes to the real problem is low, some people are aware that using MediaWiki may be restricted by the law.

  1. Maybe split off North Korean like Chinese is split into many

MessagesZh_*, as dates certainly won't be the only conflict.
I suppose have North Korean be a new variant that inherits "Korean".

  1. Or have the offended website give different choices via

LocalSettings.php.

In [[Juche#Calendar]] we see that that
calendar it is in real live use in offices just like
[[Minguo calendar]] is in Taiwan.

As to a other Korean, or South Korean calendar, all I can find is some
mention in [[Korean calendar#History]]

And in http://article.gmane.org/gmane.science.linguistics.wikipedia.technical/44401
we learn that MediaWiki is used by governments that might not be able to afford...

So let's not "cut ourselves out of the North Korean market", whose statistics are surely a secret, so don't believe any you (don't) hear.

Maybe a new code ko-KP could be considered? and make "ko-KP" to be fallback of "ko"?

Suits me. Looks like we are slowly moving towards locales instead of languages anyway. The fallback should be ko-KP => ko though.

Splitted the North Korean calendar from ko to ko-KP on r53943.
