Internationalization to Portuguese
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Author: h_dias

Description:
Greetings, i have a request to make about the Portuguese internationalization of you software. The
LanguagePt.php file is a Brazilian Portuguese translation and so i would like to request you to
change the name of the file to LanguagePt-br or something else because it isn't Portuguese. I'm
translating the file on my one, but i'm having problems with the charset encoding. If you're
interested in my translation to pure Portuguese email me.

Thanks,
Obrigado,

h

LanguagePt.php is encoded as UTF-8, as should be any replacement.
What problems are you having with encoding? Please note that these
UTF-8 language files lack a UTF-8 marker, so you may need an editor
that can be manually switched into UTF-8 display mode.

Well it's just like UK and US english, it's a matter of grammar. Also brazilian
people use a lot of mixed english/portuguese words, we on the other and like to
translate everything or use pure english. This problem crossed me because i'm
trying to implement mediawiki as my department's information management system
so i really need a good translation for corporate usage.

I'm new to this, i'm using Latin1 enconding on the web site, i will research on
this matter.

This is cause the portugese file is not fully localised yet.
Have a look at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki_localisation
to learn how you can help.

To the original bug reporter. Please read the localisation guide at:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki_localisation

And submit a new bug report with an attached patch.

The old file used brazilian portuguese and was out of date. User Get_it provided
us with a full translation using portuguese which is now the PT file.

The old translations is now a variant as under language code PT_br, users can select
in their preferences.

So from now, portuguese installation of the software use portuguese, not a variant.

The old file was not using only Brazilian Portuguese. The new archive is not a full
translation. Portuguese from Portugal is also a variant from Portuguese.

What Get_It and other users from Portugal did with
LanguagePt.php file is just like changing
LanguageEn.php from American English to British
English! This is not acceptable; therefore, his changes
must be reverted, otherwise this can be considered a
major offense to one of the Portuguese Wikipedia most
important policies: not to change from one version of
the Portuguese language to the other. No version
is "more right" than the other! The worse thing is that
these changes were kept in secret from the Brazilian
users - who translated this damn file more than a year
ago!

If there's a new separate patch against the existing messages file, please file
a new ticket with it attached. This is *not* the place for a political argument
about which variant of a language to use.
