Move wiki to www.wikimedia.org.uk to avoid confusion with Wikimedia Ukraine
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Since the Wikimedia UK (United Kingdom; WMUK) website was set up at http://uk.wikimedia.org/, the Ukrainian chapter (Wikimedia Ukraine; WMUA) has been established. As the Ukrainian Wikipedia is set up at http://uk.wikipedia.org/, the presence of WMUK at the wikimedia version of the domain has caused confusion.

The obvious way to resolve this confusion would be to move the WMUK wiki to www.wikimedia.org.uk, with uk.wikimedia.org being turned into a three-way disambiguation page (to WMUK, WMUA and the Ukrainian Wikipedia). However, WMUK needs to retain control of this domain name, including the email addresses and subdomains.

Is it possible to have such a setup with the wiki still hosted by the WMF, and hence using Single User Login etc.?

Thanks,

It seems to me that nothing should be really moved.

Just as part of normal domain name control following domain names

www.wikimedia.org.uk
wikimedia.org.uk

should be linked (I'm not sure I used the proper slang but I hope my wording is clear enough :) ) to WMUK wiki which remains on it's place.
That's it.

In that context:

  1. I'm in some doubts that Rob or his colleagues from WMF are able to do that unless they will be provided by means for complete control of above mentioned domain names. I do believe that it will be more realistic and simple so effective so faster in time if people who are in control of those domain names will be provided with WMUK wiki IP adress and all other proper stuff, needed to make domain name 'pointing' to WMUK wiki.
  1. As WMUK wiki will remain exactly on place there should not be any problem with Single User Login support etc.

Besides no problem regarding "to retain control of this domain name, including the email addresses and subdomains" are expected as neither Wikimedia Ukraine (WMUA ? :-) ) nor Wikipedia in Ukrainian seemingly will have no impact of those things (and will never have any need in those stuff as we hope :-) ).

In response to Pavlo's (rather confusing) comments:

The wikimedia.org.uk domain name must remain under the control of Wikimedia UK, as we use it for various other things - e.g. email and an internal wiki - which have to be completely seperate from the WMF. The question is whether we can "point" www.wikimedia.org.uk to the wiki, so that the wiki is hosted there rather than at uk.wikimedia.org, in place of the current redirection.

At present, this does not directly involve Wikimedia Ukraine; the changes only affect the Wikimedia UK website. The move has the approval of the Board of Wikimedia UK, who also comprise the bureaucrats on the wiki.

If the wiki can be moved, then we can discuss what should be done with uk.wikimedia.org, in collaboration with Wikimedia Ukraine.

This was a technical question about the settings for domain names that relate to Wikimedia chapters. Jimmy Wales, as an individual, has zero connection with, and zero ability to respond to, this enquiry, and I view is as being completely ludicrous that such a question should be referred to him.

The issue that was raised here several years ago has since become stale and rather irrelevant since alternate routes now exist for resolving the issue at hand.

Overall, I'd classify this ticket under #fail, with an extra helping of "wtf were you thinking when you closed this ticket?".

Sorry.

Try taking it up with Jimmy Wales.

uh, no. reopened.

It's perfectly fine here in Bugzilla, but does it need to stay open? Consider adding some Wikimedia UK people like James Forrester.

This has mostly been superceded by plans to migrate the wiki to WMUK's hosting, see:

I'll add WMUK's technical contractors to the cc's so that they are aware of this old ticket.

Since this is being resolved via the wiki_migration plans linked, does it need to remain open?

I certainly don't need it showing up as a pending task for me to work upon, so I've removed myself as assignee.

WMUK's site moved to https://wikimedia.org.uk/ some time ago, so I'm closing this as Resolved. https://uk.wikimedia.org still exists as a redirect, but someone can create a new task if they want that changed.
