Out of curiosity, does that give any tangible benefit to the wiki?

It's additional information to the link. If everybody first asks what the benefit is and nobody just does not use it because at the moment there is any benefit browser developers will never implement any possible benefits. It's given in HTML that links can have the rel attribut to specify the relation. So is there any reason for not using it?

That's not a reason, it's a buzzword.

Not adding more cruft to the page?

Furthermore: does this actually add anything. if a screen reader cannot tell that the link is external by virture of the domain of the link being different from the current site, thats pretty sad.
