Non-ASCII characters wreck mobile search
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

If you enter a word countaining accents (such as "árvíztűrő") into the search box on hu.m.wikipedia.org, one of three things can happen (apparently at random):

  • it reloads the current page
  • it shows an empty page with an error message (something about mobile wikipedia page still being under developement and having recorded the problem)
  • it shows the start page of non-mobile version (very bad! also, this is far more frequent than the other two)

Sometimes the error page is shown for a second then it jumps to the non-mobile start page.

I could only test these on online simulators ( http://www.opera.com/mobile/demo/ and http://www.testiphone.com ) but we got reports from actual mobile users too.

This is a recurrence of an older problem. It was fixed at some time....

We have the same reports on ru.m.wikipedia.org. For example user tries to look for the article "Хищники". Search page http://ru.m.wikipedia.org/wiki?search=%D1%85%D0%B8%D1%89%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%B8 shows a page with an error message ("Mobile Wikipedia is still under development and we are trying to correct
our errors...") and then redirects to the main page of non-mobile page.

I am entirely unable to replicate this. Has it resolved itself?

Apparently yes; it works correctly now in the simulators I mentioned.
