New level of semi-protection
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Author: basketofpuppieswiki

Description:
This enhancement would be a new level of semi-protection that would be stricter than the current level. This new level of semi-protection would restrict editing to those with accounts 90 days old and with 100 edits. Currently, semi-protection only requires a user be autoconfirmed. It's very easy to game and get through, requiring only 10 edits and 4 days.

Do you have a community consensus for it?

There seems to be no dissent for it.

Keep in mind, this new stricter level of semi-protection would *not* replace the existing, but just add a new option.

A bit of backround might be necessary for understanding why I am requesting this- I am the victim of cyberstalking and harassment. There are at least two long-term abusers who regularly post harassing, sexually inappropriate and stalkerish messages on my user and talk pages. Those pages have been indefinitely semi-protected, but these stalkers simply make new accounts and overcome the very low threshold for autoconfirmaiton. Full protection would disable editors-in-good-standing from communicating with me, which is not at all my goal. Raising the threshold for editing on my user and talk pages would help tremendously and likely prevent additional stalking. (Please be aware that I have already gone to the police about this issue. They are investigating.)

Moving this to Wikimedia, since this is feasible with current MediaWiki version running on Wikimedia.

5 users discussing it on the tech village pump doesn't indicate consensus.

I think adding another level of protection is a very big deal and would require a thoroughly-discussed RfC, announced in all the right places like the admin noticeboard, WP:CENT, etc.

I think you are right, but please understand that I am the victim of ongoing harassment, stalking and sexual harassment. An RfC and general community discussion would time, meanwhile I am being actively harassed. Just look at my talk page from yesterday. I beg of you to please enact this new semi-protection as an emergency measure while the community discusses it.

Unfortunately, so important changes are never introduced as an emergency measure. You may want to request a temporary AbuseFilter for that. As for now, you have to gather wide consensus to implement this change on the site configuration level.

This appears to have been a spur of the moment request related to a specific vandalism incident. Community consensus was never established and the AbuseFilter can and has been used to deter later acts of vandalism.
