Account inconsistencies after Wikimedia error during renameuser
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Hello,

About 28 hours ago (2011-3-4, 7 am UTC+1), fr:User:Céréales_Killer renamed fr:User:Mikeread to fr:User:Mike_Coppolano but got a server error (“Wikimedia error”), resulting in the account as well as the user pages being renamed but without the contributions (which remain attributed to fr:User:Mikeread).
Then, as new contributions were attributed to fr:User:Mikeread, fr:User:Céréales_Killer renamed fr:User:Mike_Coppolano to fr:User:Mike_Coppolano_old and fr:User:Mikeread to fr:User:Mike_Coppolano (again), resulting in the account being renamed with the new contributions (but without the old ones, which still remain attributed to fr:User:Mikeread).

Today, the situation is as follow:

  • An account fr:User:Mikeread created yesterday with the contributions of the original account plus 5 new contributions, an editcount of 5 and no log
  • An account fr:User:Mike_Coppolano created yesterday with 33 contributions, an editcount of 33 and no log
  • An account fr:User:Mike_Coppolano_old created in 2008 with no contribution, an editcount of 20997 and the logs of the original account

What I understand is that the original account is now fr:User:Mike_Coppolano_old, as expected after having been renamed twice, but it is still missing its contributions 28 hours after the original renaming.
Is it possible that renaming an user isn't atomic, ie. that because of the server error, the contributions remain attributed to fr:User:Mikeread? If so, could a sysadm please fix this inconsistency? If not, how long can it take for the contributions to be attributed to the right account?

For French readers, the original discussion is at http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipédia:Bulletin_des_bureaucrates#Gros_bug_ce_matin_lors_d.27un_renommage_de_compte

Thanks and best regards,

I will now manually reattribute all contributions of Mikeread and Mike_Coppolano to Mike_Coppolano_old . Once that's done, a steward can rename Mike_Coppolano to something else (Mike_Coppolano_old2 or something), then rename Mike_Coppolano_old to Mike_Coppolano, and all should be well.

Done.

This is possibly a dup of bug 27727 (If not, its what has caused it).

Hello,

Roan, thanks a lot for your help!

Céréales_Killer renamed Mike_Coppolano to Old_Mike_Coppolano and Mike_Coppolano_old to Mike_Coppolano, but unfortunately, while the editcount, logs and so on have followed, the contributions haven't. Well, at least until yesterday (ie. about 3 days later): today, the very very first have, but not the others =/

BTW, fr:User:Akeron noticed that this wasn't actually an isolated case (eg. renaming fr:User:Ligne Droite to fr:User:LD failed the same way, but the user didn't complained) and fr:User:Litlok said he lost about 20k of his contributions that way back in april 2009…
Is fixing these kind of problems something we may ask the sysadms on a regular basis?

p858snake, thanks for pointing this out! That might explain Mike's problem as well as LD's (24 february) and others' (except Litlok's, but chances are it's not related).

We (at frwiki) have about 30k queued jobs, I'll keep an eye on this number.

Thanks again and best regards,
