Sorry, all icons, not just the one for Wikipedia, are included in this bug/enhancement.

I don't believe that making the "site icon" into a button is the correct solution here. In fact, I think it's the *wrong* thing to do.

Users have been trained for years to assume that the site icon, when clicked, will take them to the Home Page. In fact, on all Wikipedia sites, this is the current behavior.

A dropdown for additional options and settings will need to be called out for what it is, exactly, and will require it's own degree of real estate. Without spending much time thinking about this, I can see something like this:

[site icon] [search input] [search icon] [config arrow].

Where "config arrow" is a downward pointing arrow with a "gear" icon in it.

An aside, btw: we should totally ditch the "search icon is a special button" thing and just design it into the box. The current visuals are kind of clunky and reminiscent of, oh, 1999.

Evolving this enhancement into two changes: use site icon as Home link and create a foldable menu, possibly exposed with a rotating arrow. The Random function will go into the menu, as well as inter-language links (bug 19834). Later we can added Featured Content (or types of) and other functions.

This is the bug for moving toward a Wikipedia menu in the mobile site. The menu could house the following types of functions:

  • article-specific, e.g., Inter-wiki language links
  • general Wikipedia, e.g., Random
  • account, e.g., Login, Watchlists

Doing this right will give us the foundation for adding features in a rational and attractive way.

Brandon and Heather are aware of this project and are loosely targeting end of January for a draft. One way to think about this is as an intermediate step toward Athena - see: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Athena
