Redirect checking during link entering
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Author: Ianusius

Description:
the symbol on the left next to the marked one

In the function in the vector edit bar, where you can insert links, there should be tested not only whether there is a link target, but also whether it is a redirect. Then the link should go directly to the redirected page.

No, it should not; it even must not disallow the insertion of specific links.
There are a few reasons (you know these) for linking to redirects, and a hint would make most of our editors to forget about [[Wikipedia:REDIRECT#NOTBROKEN]]. It would be better to inform the user when the page is a misspelling or a disambiguation, or that sort of thing.

Yes, that is correct. Sometimes redirects were created instead of misspelling pages.

I did not mean that linking to redirects must be disallowed but that there is just a small hint. It is bad for IP users when you link to redirects because they often see a old version, ~ 5 days ago (open a new bug?).

Thats the wrong argument. A problem like that should be solved by improving the cache, not by cleaning the wiki from redirects!

I see no reason why we should do this, and I think this is better off marked as RESOLVED WONTFIX. If you want it that way, perhaps suggest that an OPTION be added to do that, not make it do it for all users. :)

doesn't seem like this request has much support and adding preferences wouldn't really help anyone here.
