For example (now fixed) form 9th March: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:7th-century conflicts has the sub cats https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:620s conflicts, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:630s conflicts and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:650s conflicts but they were not shown on https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:7th-century conflicts. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:680s conflicts ''was'' shown. The template which sets the cat https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/template:ConflictsDecade was not edited for a long time. A fix was done by null-editing the subcat pages. Now they show up correctly.

This problem may may lead to apparently empty categories but in fact only the sub cats are not shown ''currently''. This problem appeared in December 2011 in dewp: MP, AAF.

Another example: [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spezial:Unbenutzte Kategorien]] lists currently (cached version 2012-03-19, 19:59:03) https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategorie:User hes-1, https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategorie:User hes-3, https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategorie:User hes-4 (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategorie:User hes-2 is not listed since it contains also a user page) although they contain the page https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Babel/Dialekt/hes (created on 2012-02-20). This page was nulledited yesterday to workaround the problem.

Example 3: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Dateiüberprüfung/Lokal_behaltbare,_aber_auf_Commons_gefährdete_Dateien was listed in https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategorie:Wikipedia:Dateiüberprüfung/Besondere Fälle but this category did not appear on the page. Apparent reason: the category was set via a template (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/... /Vorlage) which sets the category if the linked file is missing. The linked file was missing when the link was created (using the template) but was created afterwards. The category list on the page was correctly updated but the page was not delisted on the category page. A nulledit on the page (IIRC) to the page fixed it.
