Changing the title to reflect the actual bug.
Gerard, can you confirm that you are specifically looking for Runic support? Or are you looking for a generic font in WebFonts extension that covers many scripts used for Medieval language studies?

We had added Charis SIL which covers most of the scripts in the font, but not Runic.

If it is just Runic, we need not deliver a 1.1 MB webfont for just 81 glyphs. If there is no Runic specific suitable font available, subsetting(not necessarily runtime subsetting) will be required.

I suppose the point Gerard wanted to make was, that the already supported webfont "Junicode" (see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Universal_Language_Selector/FAQ#What_fonts_are_included.3F) has support for runes. However, Junicode is currently only assigned to handle Old English ("ang" language code), but should also be used for the "Runr" script code.

Change 395691 had a related patch set uploaded (by KartikMistry; owner: KartikMistry):
[mediawiki/extensions/UniversalLanguageSelector@master] Add Runic and Gothic to use Junicode webfont

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/395691

KartikMistry subscribed.

Runr is script, which can't be assigned to fonts in ULS.

Change 395691 abandoned by KartikMistry:
Add Runic and Gothic to use Junicode webfont

Reason:
As per Niklas's comment.
