Hi, re this edit: no, I didn't get the orange banner "You have new messages (last change)." I have carried out some further tests:
To eliminate a recent upgrade to Firefox 12 as a possibility, I started up other browsers (IE 7 and Safari 5.1), and then logged in on those with the same result: no "You have new messages" banner.
To see if it's something to do with my PC in general, or with my IP address, I created account Redrose64a (talk · contribs) (per WP:SOCK#LEGIT) and then used each account to send a message to the other. Redrose64a immediately got the "You have new messages" banner; Redrose64 did not.
I suspect that it's something to do with user settings or rights, but I don't see anything in "My preferences" that might control the banner. I was wondering about CSS classes: the full HTML for the banner received by Redrose64a is:
<!-- newtalk -->
<div class="usermessage"><span id="mw-youhavenewmessages">You have
<a href="/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Redrose64a&amp;redirect=no" title="User talk:Redrose64a">new messages</a>
(<a href="/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Redrose64a&amp;diff=cur" title="User talk:Redrose64a">last change</a>).</span></div>
<!-- /newtalk -->
I've added some line breaks after certain spaces, so that it doesn't flow off the right margin. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:46, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Does anybody know if this still has happened recently?

(Plus moving to Echo)

Aklapper renamed this task from you have new messages broken to Changes to my user talk page no longer trigger the orange "You have new messages" box.Jun 19 2015, 1:27 PM
Aklapper set Security to None.

Well, since the change to Echo, the orange bar hasn't appeared at all. But as I recall, the posts at VPT around the time that Echo was deployed basically said "it's been replaced and we're not bringing it back". So I suppose this is a non-issue.

Quiddity claimed this task.

Nod. The OBOD was retired, and replaced with the "talk page message indicator" in the personal toolbar (which can be toggled off at the bottom of Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-echo). There was a (gadget?script?) at Enwiki for a while that replicated the old OBOD, but I can't find that at the moment, and I hazily recall it was abandoned - possibly that was what was causing the confusing testing-results in May 2012.
I'll close this task as invalid, as the extension currently functions as expected, afaik.
