Actually the general consensus appears to be we make this a MediaWiki change rather than a site request.

But there should be no problem, changing first the site configuration and when that works and is good, than it is still possible to change the default with a MediaWiki change.
After this is set I'm a little dissatisfied. Before this there was a big login link to click but now there's only a small one.

This CSS makes it bigger: #pt-login { font-size: 1em !important; }
The real issue is I always think the whole top-right corner is clickable for login, and the bigger signup link is always catching my click...
With https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/10460/ the order was changed: in the top right corner is the login link now. This will be deployed soon with 1.20wmf5.
