A similar request is bug 38299 - " Installation of Computer Modern Unicode font family for SVG rendering"

Note Ubuntu does provide a culmus package, though according to Amir it does not provide all the needed fonts.

$ apt-cache search culmus
culmus - Type1 Hebrew Fonts for X11
culmus-fancy - Type1 Fancy Hebrew Fonts for X11

Culmus package versions:

  • Lucid : 0.101
  • Precise: 0.120
  • Quantal: 0.121

I'd prefer if you would install the entire free font pack, taken from the open
siddur project [1]. attached 18 free Hebrew fonts.

Oh yes! I know this project, but I didn't know that they made a package, too. Thank you, Matanya.

Note that I am pretty sure ops will want to use a Debian/Ubuntu package to deploy the font on the production servers.

Ok, I found a packager and a maintainer. Hopefully it will be packaged in the coming days. It has 60 fonts, not 18.

Awesome, make sure to follow up with the WMF operations folks :)

I packaged it. bug#39324 has the link to the deb.

The link is:

I'm not sure if this package will work, since the files are in a strange directory layout with spaces in directory names, and there are no /etc/fonts/conf.d configuration files.

Antoine, how do we get this to move forward from here on?

Antoine, how do we get this to move forward from here on?

I am not sure, that is definitely an ops thing but they barely look at bugzilla AFAIK :D I have added culmus to the list of packages to be installed on our Apaches: https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/21588

Gerrit change #21588 has been merged. Package culmus is now installed on image scalers:

$ dsh -M -g image_scalers dpkg --get-selections culmus
srv224: culmus install
srv223: culmus install
srv222: culmus install
srv221: culmus install
srv220: culmus install
srv219: culmus install

Change 86855 had a related patch set uploaded by Matanya:
(bug 38946) : Added culmus-fancy font to help render svg

Two hebrew fonts are now installed. This should be enough for the time-being.

Please reopen if other free fonts packages are available and can be installed.
