need for all projects to have common DOI citation templates...
Open, Stalled, LowestPublicFeature

Description

English Wikipedia, for example, uses a citation template wherein a user can input a DOI and have generated a citation template, resident in English Wikipedia, from that DOI.

I work with a project at Commons:Open_Access_File_of_the_Day wherein non-text media is pulled from free scholarly journals and posted. Each media file should be referenced to its DOI.

English Wikipedia already generates and hosts many of these DOIs. It would be nice if I could easily reference the images on Commons to the reference templates on English Wikipedia, or otherwise, if all reference templates generated from DOIs could be resident somewhere and re-used by any project.

In any case, the problem is that I cannot generate DOI references automatically on Wikimedia Commons, nor is there a good way for me to link to the references on English Wikipedia.

bzimport added a project: Wikidata.org.
bzimport set Reference to bz39487.
bzimport added a subscriber: Unknown Object (MLST).

You would hope that Wikidata would handle this kind of thing in the future.

In any case, this has nothing to do with interwiki links, so I'm moving it away from that component.
