VisualEditor must be able to handle grouped footnotes ( as discussed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Footnotes#Grouping_footnotes ) - at least, not breaking these. It also must be able to handle articles where the text for footnote is placed in the References section rather than in the body of the article - see, for example, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Francis#References .

I agree. In fact, you and I have discussed this several times, and each time I've told you that we're working on it, and that we won't go "live" for the beta without it. :-)

Ugly hacks for wikitext like this are one of the exact reasons that cause us to want everyone to use the VisualEditor.

Fixed in master and very soon in production.

I'm not clear as to why this is shown as "Closed, Resolved". VE still won't edit citations/footnotes where the body of the citation is in the References section (that is, within the reflist template), as demonstrated by the first two citations here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Francis#Name

If this is a WONT FIX, it would be helpful to so state. And if so, I'll just note that decisions not to (ever) have VE be able to handle existing, widespread Wikipedia functionality, even where that is an "ugly hack", are one of the exact reasons that cause experienced editors to not want to use the VisualEditor.

That's covered in specific tasks. Please don't open dead tasks from two years ago with drive-by comments; it's unhelpful and doesn't get anything done except wasting time diverting the conversation from the actual tasks.
