Search filter is not cleared when search text is deleted

Description

When text is deleted from the search bar, the filter is not cleared and the last suggestion is still visible which can overlap with the placeholder text as shown in http://i.imgur.com/dek3k.png

I can reproduce this by using Backspace in the search bar to delete all letters, but not via Ctrl+A to mark all text and pressing Delete on the keyboard.
