redirecting domain tartupeedia.ee to Wikipedia page
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Wikimedia Estonia has registered domain tartupeedia.ee for QR-pedia in
Tartu project.

Is it possible to have this domain registered with Wikipedias IP address.

We would like to get http://tartupeedia.ee redirected to portal page
in Wikipedia http://et.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portaal:Tartupeedia

Hi Raul,

if I understand it correctly and as tartupeedia.ee is under Wikimedia Estonia's control, Wikimedia Estonia could set up domain redirection / domain forwarding and make it point to http://et.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portaal:Tartupeedia .
Not sure where in this process you expect Wikimedia Foundation to be involved or do anything - could you please clarify?

This is also OTRS 2013021110004778.

Discussed with ops yesterday and RobH will comment here sometime after San Fransisco wakes up.

Ah, thanks for providing some background and correcting me!

Our registrant Eenet told that they can direct tartupeedia.ee domains A record to Wikipedias IP address. But after that the redirect to webpage http://et.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portaal:Tartupeedia needs to be set up in Wikipedia server.

Our registrants contact is hostmaster@eenet.ee and issue number eenet.ee #83322

I think all that needs to be done on the Wikimedia side is Gerrit change 48868...

(In reply to comment #7)

http://tartupeedia.ee/ and http://www.tartupeedia.ee/ now point to Wikipedias
IP.

Both domains (with and without www.) are now A records for 91.198.174.225 aka wikipedia-lb.esams so all the world's traffic for this domain (probably not much) will go through a caching center with no provisions to failover to a primary DC in case there's a problem.

That is correct. It would be better if it was a CNAME for just wikipedia-lb.wikimedia.org. But all traffic that originates in Estonia would be sent to .esams. anyways, per GeoDNS setup:

Estonia

233 wikipedia-lb.esams

dobson:/etc/powerdns/geomaps# cat wikipedia-lb.wikimedia.org

So it just means all traffic to tartupeedia.ee coming from somewhere outside of Europe will be served by the Amsterdam caching center instead of the (possibly closer) US centers. And as Jeremy pointed out, in case esams would be down there would be no failover.

http://wikitech.wikimedia.org/view/DNS#Geographic_DNS

example www.wikipedia.org

www.wikipedia.org is an alias for wikipedia-lb.wikimedia.org.
wikipedia-lb.wikimedia.org is an alias for wikipedia-lb.eqiad.wikimedia.org.

in the zone file it looks like this:

IN CNAME wikipedia-lb.wikimedia.org.

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/48868/5

sort alpha, rebased, add *.tartupeedia.ee not just tartupeedia.ee ServerAlias or it doesn't work with www.

making the root domain, without www, a CNAME would be a problem

<snip>
CNAME'ing a root record is technically not against RFC, but does have limitations meaning it is a practice that is not recommended.

...

Per RFC:

If a CNAME RR is present at a node, no other data should be present;

And Per IETF 'Common DNS Operational and Configuration Errors' Document:

This is often attempted by inexperienced administrators as an obvious way to allow your domain name to also be a host. However, DNS servers like BIND will see the CNAME and refuse to add any other resources for that name. Since no other records are allowed to coexist with a CNAME, the NS entries are ignored. Therefore all the hosts in the podunk.xx domain are ignored as well!

References:

http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1912 section '2.4 CNAME Records'
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1034.html section '3.6.2. Aliases and canonical names'

</snip>

So probably the best you can do is leave the A record for tartupeedia.ee as it is, but make www.tartupeedia.ee a CNAME for wikipedia-lb.wikimedia.org.

merged and pushed to cluster:

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/48868/

16:24 mutante: tartupeedia.ee now redirects to et.wp portal page (bug 44893)
16:12 mutante: gracefulling eqiad Apaches via dsh to push tartupeedia.ee redirect (bug 44893)

http://tartupeedia.ee

http://www.tartupeedia.ee

https://tartupeedia.ee

https://www.tartupeedia.ee

Can you recheck this case? Currently the URLs http://tartupeedia.ee and http://www.tartupeedia.ee don't function.

tartupeedia.ee answers with 91.198.174.225 which is an IP belonging to the 'Wikimedia Europe Network'.

I can confirm the redirect /does/ not work.

Sounds like I6194f42f048c9d2a9ca0900171c ?

Please arrange for WMF to host the DNS for these domains or failing that you can get the current DNS host to update to use the text-lb.esams.wikimedia.org address (currently 91.198.174.192 )

(also, www.tartupeedia.ee can be a CNAME to text-lb.wikimedia.org. instead of an A record)

Please arrange for WMF to host the DNS for these domains or failing that you
can get the current DNS host to update...

Or both!

(In reply to jeremyb from comment #16)

Please arrange for WMF to host the DNS for these domains or failing that you

or alternatively host the redirect itself somewhere else besides WMF.

(In reply to jeremyb from comment #19)

Raul?

If you fix this you should tell us you fixed it... I see it now resolves to 91.198.174.192 (good)

Now, moving forward would you like to either

  1. move DNS hosting to WMF? or
  2. move HTTP/redirect hosting away from WMF?

(or #3 is not care so much next time it breaks...)

Yesterday forwarded/copy-pasted your suggestion to domains hostmaster:

Please arrange for Wikimedia Foundation to host the DNS for these
domains or failing that you can get the current DNS host to update to
use the text-lb.esams.wikimedia.org address (currently 91.198.174.192
)

(also, www.tartupeedia.ee can be a CNAME to text-lb.wikimedia.org.
instead of an A record)

And they responded that they changed A records for tartupeedia.ee and www.tartupeedia.ee

Is there anything else they need to do for more permanent solution?

Yes, the options are listed in comment 20.

Raul, why did you close the bug?

This seems to be fixed now, so closing the bug. Please re-open if that's not the case.
