"Edit links" link from interwiki sidebar section to Wikidata needs further thought
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

I'm not sure if there's already been previous discussion about this. I couldn't find any.

I think the "Edit links" link from the interwiki links sidebar section to Wikidata needs further thought. For example, the link "Edit links" from the "languages" section in the left-hand sidebar section of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City goes to https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q60.

There's no standard external link arrow icon and the link text ("Edit links") doesn't make it clear that you're being sent to a separate site (compare "Edit links on Wikidata" or similar).

Unlike other "edit" links on the page (such as section edit links or the "edit" tab at the top of the page), this edit link doesn't actually lead to an editing screen. I think this is also a bit confusing.

Possibly related to this is bug 44994 and the larger ability to edit Wikidata information "remotely" (i.e., from a domain other than www.wikidata.org).

I'm not sure what thought and discussion has been put into this sidebar edit link already. I think some further consideration is warranted here.

I think bug 44940 ("edit links" going directly to the sitelinks section) is a good starting point for work on this.

Additionally, right now "edit links" uses Special:ItemByTitle, rather than just a direct link to the item, which causes bugs like bug 44536. (This probably needs a separate bug).
