Yes, I think that makes the most sense. Using a different solid color had the potential to work for most images but not for some subset.

Using a solid white, since that seems to be default on Commons.

Fixed in d2ab678f23393edcbabc4a444fd5af4c371f3cb8. Re-open if you feel strongly about checkboard pattern.
