Font for arabic displays Arabic characters folded on each other

Description

From Project chat

Hi, I couldn't find a way to stop the embedded fonts to be used on WikiData. On Wiktionary, it was used for Arabic script, but I could stop it from the preferences, but where to stop it here? I couldn't find the option to stop it here. Arabic text is rendered with a very bad font against my will and I hate it. My default fonts just render Arabic perfectly, why force us to see in that embedded ugly illegible font without any way to stop it? Thanks. (An example) Even after making a custom CSS, User:Mahmudmasri/vector.css, I wasn't able to stop the Amiri embedded font :( --Mahmudmasri (talk) 10:47, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
Click the language icon at the very top of the page, and click "display settings" at the bottom. Then turn off the "download font when needed" box. This, that and the other (talk) 11:06, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. It needs to be off by default. Arabic displays perfectly with ordinary fonts. If it's not broken, it shouldn't be fixed. Additionally that font displays Arabic characters folded on each other. --Mahmudmasri (talk) 12:51, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

See http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Project_chat#I_need_to_stop_the_embedded_fonts

Do we hardcode fonts anywhere? I think this is the ULS and some setting there?

It needs to be off by default.

I think that would needlessly make it way harder for new users to get the page rendered in a way that they can read it. I'd propose WONTFIX.

Not clear what the request is here, please clarify:

  • Turn off "Download font when needed" by default?
  • Fix the current font by improving it or replacing it?

This. I've copied the IMHO only valuable (i.e. actionable) item of information to the summary:

Additionally that font
displays Arabic characters folded on each other. --Mahmudmasri

The Arabic web font in Wikidata is Amiri, the same one as in Wikipedia. It was installed there by request from the Arabic Wikipedia community.

In Wikidata it can be disabled:

  1. Pressing the language selector link at the top (near the username)
  2. Pressing "Display settings" ("عرض الإعدادات").
  3. Selecting "System font" in "font for العربية".
  4. Save the settings ("طبّق الإعدادات").

What exactly do you mean by "characters folded on each other"? For example, Lam over Meem? That's how the Amiri font is supposed to look.

If you think that something is actually wrong, can you please send a screenshot?

Setting to lowest. Feedback needed.

I have nothing else about this. Seems pretty vague to me. I would say it should be closed as a "wontfix" for now.

Unfortunately closing this report as no further information has been provided.
