Dump stats: further analyze drop in editor counts on English Wikipedia
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Erik Zachte March 16:
Next analysis step: look at editors who mostly edited on English Wikipedia then switched to another language, (peak in tranfers around March 2007?) Maybe we did not lose that many editor on wp:en, they rather chose to refocus on their native language wiki.

Bug 35707 would help identifying accounts that belong to the same user.

Yes. For deduplicated editor stats I now have a file which merges edits from all wikis per user name, assuming user names over all wikis belong to the same person. This is of course a simplification, and it seems bug 357070 could help to reduce ambiguities.

Technically there is no reason to wait for bug 35707. As Wikistats renews all metrics on every run (could change) any changes caused by 35707 will automatically update historic counts in all reports.

WMF plans to do a limited follow up study to http://infodisiac.com/blog/2014/03/wikimedia-editor-trends-broken-down-by-project/ . This task seems a good candidate for that.

Adding Dario for visibility.

9 years old; boldly declining.
