Since iOS is a mobile operating system, it would be thoughtful to provide files in the smaller sizes too, to reduce bandwidth costs and limits for readers. Good practice even for many non-mobile readers.

Since MW can automatically resize images, I wonder if it’s possible to include meta tags that provide the appropriate URLs to take advantage of that.

There are probably a few different way to do that, one of them being to add more meta tags specifically for Apple Touch icons per documentation at http://tiny.cc/frmpvw.

However, I decided to use the lazy way, and simply reduced the file size from 31060 bytes to 11171 — which is, I believe, quite acceptable, see [[:commons:File:Wiktionary-icon.png]].

If you think it's too much, feel free to play with the file, and request a re-upload directly on Commons.
