Search link from a nonexistent userpage should be fixed or removed
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Visiting a non-existent userpage on the English Wikipedia (for example: [[User:Mathewrbowker]] - which is a similar username to mine but doesn't exist) and clicking the second bullet ("Search for "User:Mathewrbowker" in existing pages of namespace User.") does not display search results but instead redirects users back to the same page. Search results should be displayed when that link is clicked.

does not display search results but instead redirects users back to the
same page. Search results should be displayed when that link is clicked.

Note: It also says "User account "Mathewrbowker" is not registered." so in my opinion, the search results *are* displayed.
What would you have expected instead?

Matthew: Could you answer comment 1, please?

Woops, sorry. Thanks for the poke.

The problem is not on that specific page. The problem is the second link, or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search/User:Mathewrbowker, which redirects back to the user page.

The expected result is for a search results page to appear. It doesn't, unless I force it by manipulating the URL.

So, either that link should disappear, or search functionality for the User: namespace should be fixed.

This isn't a bug with the search system. Moving accordingly.

Changing title to be a bit more accurate.

For a further note, any page the User: namespace that is visited via "Special:Search" is redirected back to a non-existent userpage. There are no longer the ability to search for users at all.

I tried this just now and it worked. It must've been fixed at some point.
