Make Russian as the fallback language for bxr.wikipedia.org instead of English language
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Here's the previous discussion: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46751

Nemo 2013-04-13 08:49:57 MSD: "Please file a separate request to make ru the fallback language for bxr, after confirming with the community that they don't mind the Russian default."

Buryatia is Russian Republic and almost 100 % of Buryats know
Russian language, not English. And also Buryat language uses Cyrillic script
(as Russian), not Latin script (as English) so many international words simply

no need do translate.

Here is discussion with previous sysop of bxr.wikipedia Gubin Michail:
http://bxr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Википеэди:Community_Portal/Archive_2012#.D0.97.D0.B0.D1.81.D0.B8.D0.BB.D1.8C.D0.B5_.D0.BB.D0.B0.D1.82.D0.B8.D0.BD.D0.B8.D1.86.D1.8B_.D0.B2_.D0.BA.D0.BE.D0.B4.D0.B5

He argeed that it will be better to using Russian instead of English. Here's the opinion of another native speaker, user Aldar Badmaev: http://bxr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk%3ASoul_Train&diff=31713&oldid=31702

«... As for the system, I think it is important to translate it in the Buryat
language. If necessary, [using] Russian language.»

So and I, temporary sysop of bxr.wikipedia.org, user Soul Train, request to change the fallback language for bxr.wikipedia.org from English to Russian. Thanks.

We don't have a MessagesBxr.php ? :/

So, can somebody ask to me - will you change the fallback language for bxr.wikipedia.org or not? Will you change namespaces or not? https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46751
What are you doing, guys? I see nothing changes, I just asking you to change those fallback language and change namespaces, this is the simple thing. Why are you so slow?

(In reply to comment #3)

Why are you so slow?

"Open Source" is not the same as "the developers must do my bidding." Everyone here wants to help, but no one else has any obligation to fix the bugs you want fixed. Therefore, you should not act as if you expect someone to fix a bug by a particular date or release. Aggressive or repeated demands will not be received well and will almost certainly diminish the impact and interest in your suggestions. People are volunteers, just like you.

Also, for configuration changes, local consensus is normally required.
Could you discuss the matter on the Village pump page of the bxr wiki (or any other appropriate place) to confirm that this change is wanted by the community, and paste the link to the discussion here? I'm not convined that discussing with the previous sysop (which was also already eight months ago) is enough.

So you think that English fallback language is very good option for Buryat language, language with Cyrillic script, language of people of Russian Federation, of people, 100 % of whom know Russian language and very few of them - English? OK - don't fix it. But if someone ask me why did Buryat Wikipedia is so poor project, I'll say that nobody wants to develope this project, because somebody want to see some "Community desicion". What are you talking about? Year ago this project could be closed, there are 2-3 active users and the main reason why Buryats don't want to edit this Wikipedia is that thay simply don't understand English fallback language. You can take offense at me, but just turn on the logic - I got no time to wait, and you arranging a bureaucracy.

No, I never wrote this. See my comments above.

Personally I highly appreciate that you are actively working on making it not a "poor project" anymore, thanks for that!

You are free and very welcome to discuss the general procedure if you think it does not make sense, preferably on the discussion page of https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requesting_wiki_configuration_changes .
For this specific bug report, the discussion is out of scope as we'd miss the target audience here which is affected by the rules.

Andre, thanks for this link, because it's hard to searching the correct page for Requests in such Giant project as Meta.

Fallbacks are not Wikimedia configuration.
