Upload of several large files Wikimediafoundation.org and Commons
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Author: l_guldbrandsson

Description:
Please upload the pdf in the zip file, linked below, to Wikimedia Commons for User:Hannibal, and the sla in the zip file to WikimediaFoundation.org, also for User:Hannibal. The first exceed the 100 MB limit, and the second is of a format that Wikimedia Commons does not allow.

The link leads to a zip file in Dropbox, that includes 3 files: a pdf, a sla file and a txt that describes both files. Same description is valid for both files.

Thanks!

Adding shell keyword. For future reference: Compressing by using .tar is welcome (zip is very CPU intensive).

(foundation wiki) "User account "Hannibal" is not registered."

Will do.

Since I don't have an account on the Wikimedia Foundation wiki, how do you suggest that I proceed? Do I apply to get an account there, or can someone else upload it?

Really depending on what you need. If you don't mind these files not being visible in your contributions, I can upload them to both wikis.

If you /do/ mind, then this bug should probably be assigned to Reedy, who's usually taking care of them, and you should request the creation of an account at [[meta:Request for an account on the Foundation wiki]] (this should just be a formality in your case, obviously).

I do not mind these files being visible in somebody else's contributions. I usually place all my things in public domain :-) Thanks for your help!

Hm...

Now that I downloaded the archive, I see that only one of these files is over 100 MiB, which means that you can upload it to Commons yourself, since the upload limit's been raised to 500 MiB some time ago. To do that, go to Preferences --> Uploads --> Experimental features and enable "Chunked uploads for files over 1MB in Upload Wizard".

The second file is more trouble, as the Foundation wiki does not allow .sla files to be uploaded there (sorry, didn't check it before).

Permitted file types: png, gif, jpg, jpeg, xcf, pdf, mid, ogg, ogv, svg,
djvu, tiff, tif, otf, ai, ppt, doc, xls, eps, zip, odf, odp, ods, odt, odg,
ott, wmv, dv, avi, mov, mp3, aif, aiff, ppd, indd, inx, psd, ai, omniplan,
dia, ogg, ogv, oga, webm.

Sorry, it doesn't work for me. I've tried several times and the upload is aborted after several minutes, even after I tried chunked uploads.

Oh. I thought "Welcome to Wikipedia" was uploaded as a sla, but it turns out that it was uploaded as a zip: http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/File:Welcome2WP_SOURCE_082410.zip. Can you do that instead?

Even if the documents are PD, we should ensure proper attribution is taking place, uploading under the correct username is the best course here.

(Sorry for the long conversation here.)

I have now applied for an account on the Wikimedia Foundation wiki. And again, thanks for all the attention and help.

FYI, the .sla file is already at
<https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/File:
Kulturskatter_p%C3%A5_n%C3%A4tet_print_plus_1.zip>

Great! And can the pdf be uploaded to Commons separately?

Uploaded the PDF file at
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:
Kulturskatter_p%C3%A5_n%C3%A4tet_print_plus_1.pdf>

Thank you! And thanks to all of you.
