client watchlist shows more than just the last change on the item
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

On the English Wikipedia, with "Expand watchlist to show all changes, not just the most recent" turned off and "Show Wikidata edits in your watchlist" turned on, every change to the Wikidata entries corresponding to my watched pages appears to be listed in my watchlist, as opposed to only the most recent change to each entry.

This seems fixed now. I can't reproduce it.

Um, this is definitely still present on my end. See the attached screenshot.

Aha! Now I see what you mean. Ok I can reproduce this.
What is happening is that for each Wikipedia article only one entry is shown in the watchlist (the most recent one). However for Wikidata edits several are shown.

This appears to have been fixed at some point. Will reopen if I find that it's not.

Happened again today. Not sure what's going on. I did test with by adding an article with multiple recent Wikidata changes to my watchlist when I closed this, but now I'm seeing the same issue again.

It appears that this bug was not fixed or was broken afterwards again, as I mentioned in T90435#4119854 before. If I need to file a new task, feel free to close it and forward me to this. I got down to writing a clear task description before finding this task, so I’ll just copy it below.

I don’t have an enabled setting for showing multiple edits from the same pages in my watchlist (enhanced RC?), but Wikidata edits don’t acknowledge this and show each edit from Wikidata without checking for specific pages. I think that this behaviour should be fixed with showing me and others without enhanced RC only the latest edit.

This routinely brings my watchlist into disarray if one person on Wikidata edits an item too much:

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Go to https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Россия
  2. Add it to your watchlist
  3. Set up showing Wikidata edits in the watchlist if you don’t have it
  4. Check the watchlist for 20+ edits in the same item Q159

Since my report I’ve disabled Wikidata edits entirely because having frequently edited items in your watchlist with Wikidata edits enabled is a massive pain for users in default configuration.

Will anything be done to this? Watchlisting any big item (such as ones for any country) completely breaks my watchlist with multitudes of edits to the same articles, why is this completely neglected? This is a default configuration, not some option, why is no one working on the fix?

I would recommend making a new ticket, this one probably caused by something completely different.
