Upload of an image to commons.wikimedia.org is not changing the current image
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description:
I have uploaded a new image to this page 4 times in the last day:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Scientific_Universe.png

In all 4 cases the upload succeeded but the "current" version of the image would not change.

This is what I experienced:

  1. Upload a new version of the image
  2. What is shown is a copy of the old image from April 22nd.
  3. After uploading, all the older image uploads become correct, showing the images I actually uploaded, not the April 22nd version.
  4. Even if I revert to one of the earlier versions the current image won't change.

This bug is blocking me from updates. There is no workaround. Browser is latest version of chrome on Win7 32 bit.

Purge?

Ah, I just logged in with chrome is incognito mode and it's showing the current version of the file now, even though it is still showing the old version from my browser cache. So this bug is less critical than I thought, it has something to do with browser refresh. It is still a bug.

Eric: Right now I cannot reproduce a bug.
If you still see an old version of the file somewhere (where?), could you provide exact steps (logged in? not logged in? Browser info?) where and how to see it? (For example, if you refer to a specific thumbnail size or not, and links/URLs to the specific affected image are always welcome.)

And does https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:Purge help?

Andre: Thanks for looking into this. I still see the bug happening. Did you try this repro?

  1. Upload a png at 1600 * 1200
  2. Upload a different png at 1600 * 1200
  3. Repeat steps 1 & 2 until you see the wrong image displayed after uploading. If you wait a while and then refresh the image it will eventually be correct.

Note: It is possible this is a server side caching bug. I have only seen the behavior after an image has been on wikipedia for a while. It is currently happening with this image every time I upload an update:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Scientific_Universe.png

Expected: Never show the wrong image after upload. If necessary, inform the end user that their image will eventually be updated after it has moved through the cache or re-rendered at other resolutions or whatever it is that Wikipedia is doing.

Is this still happening. We had a large number of server side caching bugs around the time of your previous post which have been fixed (sort of anyways. The infrastructure surounding caching of thumbs is fragile)

The specific image seems to work as expected nowadays. Closing this ticket.
