The reference editor allows me to group references, and allows me to include a ref name parameter to make them reusable, but has no way of actually calling that ref name.

Proposing for July 4 milestone (alt. July 11). This is imho not a nice-to-have but a requirement since re-using of references is quite common and without it, it would seem incomplete.
The ability to create such references or turn existing ones into it may be less important than the ability to edit such references (e.g. a <select> with all ref-names available on this page).
