Special:Nearby should show allow option for imperial units
Open, LowestPublicFeature

Description

Author: KilliondudeWP

Description:
For usability reasons, Special:Nearby should allow an option to show units in imperial units. Currently it uses km and m.

I realize most countries have adopted the metric system and so should the US -- yada yada, but the reality is that imperial units are more familiar to US denizens and, from what I understand, parts of the UK.

I was wondering when this bug would get raised :)
We currently haven't really visited preferences on mobile.

We are keen to avoid the situation of having a huge mess of a page like Special:Preferences

I suspect we'll do this at some point but it's a matter of finding designers time...

We don't have bandwidth to do this.

"too busy to do this" isn't a reason to decline, its a reason to let something sit open forever like hundreds of other tickets

People are still asking up on this (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)&oldid=1107590394#Nearby_units )

Xaosflux changed the subtype of this task from "Task" to "Feature Request".Aug 30 2022, 8:30 PM

Likely needs to be tied to a larger localization setting being made first, perhaps T294707

Decent idea from an IP user at en village pump technical:

why not just display both units, as is done in virtually every Wikipedia article with any kind of measurements?

Aklapper lowered the priority of this task from Low to Lowest.Sep 5 2022, 7:45 PM
