deployment-sql.pmtpa.wmflabs and deployment-sql02.pmtpa.wmflabs are still running MySQL, moreover using Lucid when we are using Precise nowadays.
We could use two new Precise instances with MariaDB installed and then migrate the data from the old databases to the new ones.
That most probably need lot of adjustments in the puppet manifests used to deploy databases servers.

fwiw, i once already had MariaDB in labs, back in the test branch, using the external repo, but of course we use our own packages now and this got lost in the test branch merge

Sean Pringle has migrated the old databases to the eqiad database instance deployment-db1.eqiad.wmflabs. It runs MariaDB.
