Cite: References should be rendered using the <Cite reference link> message (which varies by wiki)
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

On the French Wikipedia any number which identifies a given reference, say 1, is not meant to appear in brackets.
When VEditing any page instead (try https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gare_aux_Oreilles for example) it does become [1], and then it's back to plain 1 once the page is saved.
So VE is not being much WYSIWYG here. Can/should this be fixed? Thanks!

bzimport raised the priority of this task from to Medium.Nov 22 2014, 2:12 AM
bzimport added a project: Parsoid.
bzimport set Reference to bz56240.

This is because the message <Cite reference link> is customised on frwiki to remove the square brackets that are there by default - https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Cite_reference_link - and Parsoid is re-creating the appearance of these rather than re-using the message.

Or possibly we could make this rendering be done using CSS rather than a message, which could be used by both, and is a cleaner approach.

We already style auto-numbered external links with CSS, and should be able to use the same technique for citations as well.
