For Cantonese Wikipedia, MediaWiki:edittools is quite a useful tool to insert special characters used solely in Cantonese and not in Mandarin. It would be really helpful if it is shown in the interface of VisualEditor as well. I am not sure whether other wikis have similar requests for this.

So I enabled 即見編輯 (Visual Editor) on https://zh-yue.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:%E5%96%9C%E5%A5%BD%E8%A8%AD%E5%AE%9A#mw-prefsection-betafeatures .
But comparing VE (編輯) and classical editing (改原碼) I'd love to know *where* you would display MediaWiki:edittools because there is no textfield anymore?
This relates to bug 50296 (which implements an alternative to MediaWiki:edittools) which is fixed, but not yet deployed. And slightly to bug 38029, because the new implementation does not actually reuse those same characters.
I think that this should be merged into bug 38029, though there are issues there (which I'll comment on).
