I see now, that there is a dialog box for reference group, while in most cases, where refs are being used as citation, we dont need to fill that group. I propose than to give a tip below that dialox box saing: "For reference list leave empty".

Beyond also adding it to references' dialogs too (now done :-)), there's the TODO from that file:
// TODO: Use a drop-down or something, and populate with existing groups instead of free-text
But will split that off into a new bug (and it will require a new kind of OOjs UI widget anyway).
