Can someone add the meanings to the different job groups/types to showJobs page? for instance what is the difference between refreshLinks and refreshLinks2?
Having this sort of information available in the script's output would be very helpful. Maybe add a "--descr" flag to the command's invocation?

I'm not sure. The script is meant for system administrators not users. It might be more appropriate to document this info on mw.org
refreshLinks2 in particular has been removed since 2014. There are no longer separate jobs for this purpose. Instead, the root job traverses and slowly splits up into smaller jobs using BacklinkJobUtils::partitionBacklinkJob.
Beyond that, each of these classes has documentation in their class file in MediaWiki core, as well as on doc.wikimedia.org. I don't think the showJobs.php script should include these descriptions.
