Error when searching for €
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Author: bugzilla65535

Description:
Intention:
I was trying to search for the character "€"

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. search for the character "€" (without the quotes) using Firefox

Actual Results:
Error message saying "An error has occurred while searching: The search backend returned an error:"

Expected Results:
I expected to end up at our euro sign page. Failing that, I expect an informative error message. No matter what the cause was, you should not send a "The search backend returned an error" message to an end user.

Reproducible: Always

Tested with Firefox 27.0.1 under Windows XP, both with the latest version/updates. Happens every time.

Tested with Opera 18.0.1284.68, Chrome 33.0.1750.146, and IE 8.0.6001.18702.

Chrome and IE sent me to the Euro sign page after a redirect from the Unicode character.

Firefox and Opera gave me the "An error has occurred while searching: The search backend returned an error:" message.

Version: unspecified
Severity: normal
Whiteboard: cirrus-fixed

On what wiki?

This is very likely the wrong component for the bug

It looks like I made an error and this should be under Wikimedia→lucene-search2 instead. Sorry about that. Do I need to do anything to move it?

I just re-checked it, and it still throws the error.

URL for the error page is https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=%E2%82%AC&title=Special%3ASearch&fulltext=Search if that is any help.

lsearchd bug per comment 3. moving and wontfixing like all the others.
