Mailman mailing list messages should link to the web archive version in the footer
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Messages delivered by Mailman should link to the web archive of the specific messages in the footer, so that it is easier to refer others to them in discussions.

This is not possible with Mailman 2.1, but based on http://www.mail-archive.com/mailman-users%40python.org/msg60562.html, it seems like it will be possible with Mailman 3. This enhancement should be implemented when WMF deploys Mailman 3 (after it has been released).

I cannot find an item in https://bugs.launchpad.net/mailman and as this refers to non-existing code in a non-existing version I don't see much sense in keeping this ticket open. It should be fixed in upstream first, that's where to ask. :)

Once this has been implemented upstream, a release has been made, the release has been packaged for Ubuntu and the software on Wikimedia servers is upgraded this would be done.

Mailman3 uses an Archived-At header:

Subject: [Test4] Re: Test new changes
List-Id: <test4.polymorphic.lists.wmcloud.org>
Archived-At: <https://polymorphic.lists.wmcloud.org/hyperkitty/list/test4@polymorphic.lists.wmcloud.org/message/2WA77XPVA2BATIMK2F77VJ4F6NRBLOPD/>
List-Archive: <https://polymorphic.lists.wmcloud.org/hyperkitty/list/test4@polymorphic.lists.wmcloud.org/>

List-Subscribe: <mailto:test4-join@polymorphic.lists.wmcloud.org>
List-Unsubscribe: <mailto:test4-leave@polymorphic.lists.wmcloud.org>

It's not in the footer, but I think that's good enough? Also hyperkitty is a much easier (and searchable!) interface to use, so I think Mailman3 should address the spirit of this request, making it easier to link to the web archive.

Agreed. Let's close it once migrated to mailman3 and people can reopen if they feel strongly otherwise.

Per the above message.
