Request for a mailing list for the Wikimaps project (GLAM, Historical, Nordic)
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

requested name of the mailing list:
wikimaps

alternatively:
wikimaps-nordic

reasoning/explanation of purpose (and link to community consensus, if applicable):
The mailing list is needed to allow discussion within the Wikimaps Old Maps / Nordic project to allow various groups of actors to discuss with each other (OpenHistoricalMap, local Nordic mappers and GLAM partners). See the project pages at wikimaps.wikimedia.fi. The maps-l would be a natural environment, but discussing local Nordic issues and from a GLAM perspective could put off the more technical people in the maps-l and vice versa. Also, it may be easier to attract the people from the historic mailing list (OHM/OSM) to a specific list. If the project ends, the remaining subscribers should migrate to to maps-l.

If the tach community wishes, we will join the maps-l, but we will need admin privileges for that.

Please provide a link to a discussion showing community agreement for the creation of a new list.

I am asking for community consensus.

Any update on the state of the discussion? Did you guys agree the list would be helpful for your purposes? Thanks :-)

Hi Susanna—are there any updates here? Have you reached a decision yet?

I just realized my comment could be read differently from what I meant: "I am asking for community consensus" - with this request, I meant, I ask for permission from the tech community. Not that I would go out and ask for it. We have not discussed this within a community, because the requested mailing list is for creating a community platform. There are several ways we communicate at the moment (too many): FB group, blog, Commons pages, newsletter, direct mail, Hangouts, Wikimedia maps-l list and OpenHistoricalMap historic mailing list.... I will not be able to get a consensus, maybe some thumbs, who would know if that is statistically a consensus.

Thanks, Susanna.

The name 'wikimaps' look OK to me, especially after I read your blog post about maps at the Zurich Hackathon and your plans for the wikimaps.org domain.

Before I create the list for you, I need the following information:

  1. Should list archives be public or private?
  2. Should new subscriptions be approved by list moderators/administrators, or should users be automatically subscribed upon confirmation (which they do themselves)?

Thank you!

Thanks Tomasz!

I think everything should be public and joining should be free. I'll put out a newsletter on Tuesday the latest. It will be a good opportunity to announce the new mailing list!

Best, Susanna

The list has now been created, and I configured it to have public archives, with new members added after (their) confirmation.

You can configure the rest of the settings, including list description and a terse identifying phrase at the following web page:

https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/admin/wikimaps

The web page for users of your mailing list is:

https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimaps

The list will also be available in the e-mail to news gateway Gmane.org as

gmane.org.wikimedia.wikimaps

Please list and describe your mailing list at the appropriate section of:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Overview

I just sent the admin password to the two given e-mail addresses, and made them list administrators.

This request is now closed; enjoy your new mailing list!
