Special:Preferences buttons Save/Restore all default settings (in all sections) is confusing
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

This is related to bug 18961 and might be solved by some version of the idea proposed at bug 65317.

At the bottom of [[Special:Preferences]], the options are:

[Save] Restore all default settings (in all sections)

"Save" is a button. "Restore all default settings (in all sections)" is a link.

Especially when you're on the gadgets page, this is a bit confusing. The whole page is

[Something to click on] Explanation of what clicking here does.
[Something to click on] Explanation of what clicking here does.
[Something to click on] Explanation of what clicking here does.

So when you get to the bottom, it almost seems like it's saying that if you click on this save button, then it will "save" by restoring the default settings everywhere.

A better design could include:

Bug 18961 – Making the "Restore all" link into a "Restore all" button.
Bug 65317 – Putting the Save button after the "Restore all" button.

or probably other options, too.

I don't see how this ticket is different from bug 18961. Dup, to me.

I asked the complainant about that bug, and he did not agree that it was exactly the same.

Closing. T67317 stands on its own and I have closed T20961 just a moment before.

Not sure why the Gadgets page is confusing - in the current incarnation we have a list of checkboxes and the Save / Reset buttons at the bottm. Reset says clearly it is for all pages.

Maybe we should suggest / provide a link to reload the page to bring back the user where she was before clicking on Gadget checkboxes.
